Growing up between New York City and Philadelphia in the 80s and 90s, hip hop, rap, r&b and soul music was everywhere. I loved it all, especially at the same time in the early 90s that I was getting deeper into the jamband scene.
In my mind, hip hop and jamband music have never been entirely separate from each other. When I think about jambands and what I love about that scene, it's the creativity to explore and not be tied to any one sound.
Similarly, what I love about hip hop is its ability to wrap around almost any other musical style to add layers of rhythm. For years, I didn't acknowledge how much I value and love that. This project is a way to bring them all together in what I hope is fun and interesting.
What should I do w/this database?
What you've got here is a growing list of samples from across the jamband world. A few seconds each, the files can be used as layers or mix-ins for anything you're working on; when we think especially about the live experience, capturing a key moments, riffs, etc. to place within a remix is fundamentally something I have thought about for so many years and the time is now to try it out. Enjoy! If there is a sample you'd want to use, fill out the quick form and let me know - I'll work on adding them.
